Toolkit for alcohol workers
Staff training
When alcohol services decide that they want to develop their response to the issues related to the children and families of their adult clients, it becomes important for their staff to receive training that not only raises awareness but also develops understanding and skills.
The following are signposts to the kind of training alcohol staff would benefit from in order to develop their response to children’s issues.
Awareness raising training- Basic child abuse and neglect
- Domestic violence
- Affect of alcohol on parenting and childcare
- Child protection – local procedures, multi-agency responsibilities and responses
- Assessment of Children in Need and their Families
- Developing parenting capacity
- Family support
- Record keeping and report writing
It may be possible to locate training in your local area, and key agencies to contact in respect of this are your local ACPC training department, who have responsibility to provide a range of trainings relating to child protection from a multi-agency perspective.
Other agencies and organisations that may be able to provide short course and one day basic training courses are:
Alcohol Concern www.alcoholconcern.org.uk
NSPCC www.nspcc.org.uk
National Family and Parenting Institute www.nfpi.org
Parentline Plus www.parentlineplus.org.uk
Women’s Aid www.womensaid.org.uk
Alternatively you could come together with a number of local agencies and combine funds to request specific specialist training to meet identified needs.
